Our board members, other business leaders, and campus recruiters give us a clear message: in addition to the relevant technical skills in finance, marketing, management and accounting, we must ensure that our graduates can think clearly, write coherently, speak well, and—most importantly—display a certain maturity and wisdom.
One of our board members recently noted that, given the dynamic and even chaotic nature of our times, our graduates will very quickly face “unscripted situations” where all their education in business, important as it is, will not be sufficient; they need to be grounded in the wisdom of the ages if they are to understand and be productive in the changing contexts within which they will work. This message was affirmed by the Carnegie Foundation’s landmark 2011 report Rethinking Undergraduate Business Education, which concluded that undergraduate business education is “too often narrow, fails to challenge students to question assumptions, think creatively, or to understand the place of business in larger institutional contexts.”
In order to help our students cultivate this wisdom, we therefore require that, in addition to their business coursework, they should also complete the following liberal arts requirements*, which are designed to provide our students with a challenging immersion in the Catholic intellectual tradition, to expose them to what Matthew Arnold famously called “the best which has been thought and said in the world."
We also welcome you to view sample tracking sheets for each degree program, or view courses in list format for each degree program.
Please Note: Students in the Busch School of Business are required to receive a C- or better in all Business (with ACCT, FIN, MGT, MKT prefixes), Economics (with ECON prefix), and Mathematics courses.
