About Marc Lore
"As young as 4 years old, I always wanted to be a farmer, because they grow stuff from nothing," said Marc, when asked when he knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur. Although not a farmer today, Marc found his passion in building things from nothing and making people happy.
He founded Diapers.com, Quidsi, and The Pit, co-founded Jet.com, and helped lead Walmart's e-commerce division, just to name a few accomplishments. More recently he has purchased the Minnesota Timberwolves, an NBA franchise, and is working on a new startup in the food industry called Wonder.
Event Overview
The event began with a brief introduction of Marc and a series of questions prepared by the hosts. He shared his story of his first job, his life struggles, and how he has created so much success for himself and all those impacted by his ventures. He emphasized the importance of culture and hard work, saying, "The people who have their own goals and who do all the little things knowing they won't get rewarded or acknowledged are the people who change the world."
He encouraged the aspiring entrepreneurs in the room to keep a present-thinking mindset, giving a venture everything they have without fear of risk or failure.
During a round of student questions from the audience, Marc shared his "must's" of starting a business:
- Openness and curiosity
- Preparedness and willingness to put in the time
- Focus on culture and root business practices around it
- Winning with customers at the focal point
In his final remarks, he summarized his advice into his number one recommendation, “Give it the best you got, every day, every week, every month. Don't complain, put the hard work in, and trust me magical things will happen for you.”
Following the event, the Entrepreneurship Club hosted a food social for attendees to further network.
