Have you been wanting to add a minor to your degree but can’t figure out which will serve you best in your field? Take just a few minutes to learn all that there is to know about our school’s sustainability minor and how it can help you achieve your professional goals.

Catholic University’s Green Initiative

Our sustainability minor was developed as an effort to further Catholic U’s green initiative. As the largest college campus in D.C., having a positive environmental impact goes a long way. If you weren’t already familiar with it, our school’s green initiative involves the production of clean energy via solar panels and energy that the school has purchased with Green e-Certification. In short, all of the energy used by Catholic U is environmentally friendly. Seeing as Catholic University is educating the generations of the future, introducing the sustainability minor ensures that the passion for bettering the environment will continue.

Sustainability Coursework: Something for Everyone

Perhaps you are someone who doesn’t particularly enjoy learning science; that shouldn’t stop you from pursuing a sustainability minor! Catholic University aims to make environmentalism enjoyable for all students, incorporating sustainability into nearly all of the schools at the university. Some examples of sustainability courses that we offer are “Government and Non-Profit Accounting”, “Lost Cities and Ancient Empires”, “Nutrition”, and “Theories of Ethics”. Essentially, there are three subcategories to be explored with the sustainability minor: social, environmental, and economic. If you happen to be majoring in Anthropology, Economics, or Social Sciences, a minor in sustainability would be convenient for you, especially as there is a lot of overlap in the coursework of the sustainability minor and those three courses of study. But, of course, everyone is encouraged to apply regardless of their major.

What’s in it For You?

There is, however, another factor to consider aside from convenience and interest: what the sustainability minor tells employers about you. Oftentimes, an employer’s first impression of you is based on the information that they gather from your resume. So, when an employer sees a sustainability minor on your list of qualifications, what will they infer about you? Being environmentally conscious may signal to employers that you pay attention to detail, as serious issues regarding the environment in connection with the population’s quality of life are often overlooked. It is because environmentalism is often overlooked that the sustainability minor can also be viewed as a team player: they do the work that no one else seems to want to do, or deem important enough to do. More than any of these attributes, however, what will stand out to employers is your dedication to innovation. To be innovative is to not only be compliant with change, but to be excited by it. With an innovative mindset comes a simultaneous thirst for both problem-solving and creativity: two concepts that are arguably the most important in the modern working world.

Be Big, Be Bold; Let’s Better Together

Defining your major is all about determining your future profession, whereas choosing a minor is all about asking yourself what else you would like to contribute to the world. That being said, pursuing a sustainability minor would have a higher global impact than nearly any other minor that you could choose. If your dream is to leave your mark on the world, choose to study sustainability here at The Catholic University of America.
