Amanuel Assefa, Catholic U '20, is an Audit Associate at CohnReznick, LLP. In undergrad, Amanuel was an Accounting student. Below, he shares his experiences in the Busch School and Catholic University:
Why did you choose to attend the Busch School at The Catholic University of America?
"I went to Catholic schools starting from junior high all the way to high school. I thrived personally from the discipline and structure I was exposed to in high school so I wanted that to continue through my college days.
I fell in love with the campus when I visited in the summer of 2016. I loved the fact that it was not a big school. The day I visited, the person showing me around mentioned that the Busch School received a generous grant and that there will be significant changes made to the business school. I wanted to be a part of that. "
What were some highlights of your time in the Busch School and at Catholic University?
"All business majors were required to take career classes each semester that were comprised of resume writing, how to conduct oneself on a job interview, etc. These courses really came in handy, as they were based on real life scenarios. By the time I was senior, I was well equipped with the tools to be successful as a professional.
The most important highlight though was Professor Kirst. All the professors at Catholic University want their students to succeed, but he was the most adamant. He was there at every step of my journey. He would go above and beyond to help his mentees to be successful post-Catholic, so long as they are hard working and have discipline. I remember around the first time I met him, he lent me a book titled "Make Your Bed" by William McRaven. The book was about how taking personal responsibility, having determination and grit eventually leading to success. Professor Kirst demands discipline and grit. If a student exhibits these behaviors in the classroom, he will fight for his/her post Catholic University success. I am a prime example of that! "
What have you enjoyed most about working as an Audit Associate?
"Pubic accounting is challenging, yet rewarding. Every single day is an opportunity to learn. The hours are long and expectations are high, but the satisfaction one gets when completing a task is like no other."
What advice do you have for prospective students?
"Your professors want you to succeed, so fully leverage that. If you put in the effort, you'll get the reward.
Utilize all the resources at the Busch school has to offer, as they will have a lasting impact in your career. I would also advise prospective students to enjoy the city and all it has to offer. Make friends. Make sure that you don't look back on your college days and have regrets."
