Jack Shields graduated with a degree in Accounting in 2022 and now excels as a Staff Auditor in Financial Services at Crowe LLP. He shares that his experiences at the Busch School went beyond education; it provided real-world experiences and a dynamic work environment. Jack has embraced the world of accounting by navigating cutting-edge markets while dissecting changes impacting the American economy daily.

Why did you choose to attend the Busch School at The Catholic University of America?

The major reason I chose to attend the Busch School at Catholic University was because of its direct access to a major city job market. The Busch school’s location makes it extremely advantageous for internship/job opportunities. Commuting to work is easy via the Red Line metro. Another reason was the reputation of the accounting program. The department pushes its students to not only succeed, but thrive.

What were some highlights of your time in the Busch School and at Catholic University?

My biggest highlight was building relationships with the accounting department professors. These individuals went above and beyond not only in providing me the tools for academic success, but also seeing personally to my job search and helping me to find opportunities that best fit my personality and drive. I still keep in touch with my professors, as they have had a profound impact on my life. I would not be where I am now without them! Along with this, I cherish my time spent on the Men’s Rowing team, and helping to build the culture from the ground up. That experience shaped my work ethic, and I still help out with the team to this day! It is an honor and a privilege.

What have you enjoyed most about working in your position?

I enjoy the dynamic work environment. Having the opportunity to perform highly-technical public audits is something that has kept me sharp and fostered an “always learning” mindset, which I very much enjoy. I have gotten to learn so much about the large-scale capital markets, while also understanding how our economy works on a very granular level. As accounting is an ever-evolving space, I appreciate working in an environment that is on the cutting edge of the markets and having the ability to study changes and their effect on the American economy each day.

What advice do you have for prospective students?

Get involved! Do not limit yourself to one or two experiences in college. Have an open mindset and a mindset that promotes growth. Each day is a gift, and an opportunity to learn and achieve. Live for each day, and try to live it fully. Make the most of the opportunities that come your way, you never know what they may lead to!
