Professor Hutton began teaching at CUA in 2014 and joined the Busch School of Business in 2022 as an adjunct instructor, where he teaches financial and managerial accounting. A teacher-practitioner, he also serves full-time at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History as an accounting advisor to the museum director.
He served in the U.S. Army for twenty years in accounting and finance roles, both stateside and overseas. A highlight of his military career was his work with the On-Site Inspection Agency (now the Defense Threat Reduction Agency), where he acted as the principal financial advisor to the U.S. team negotiating cost issues with representatives of the former Soviet Union under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.
Following his retirement from the Army, Professor Hutton held financial management positions at several Washington, D.C. agencies, including the Small Business Administration, the Department of Energy, the Transportation Security Administration, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and the U.S. Coast Guard, where he performed budgeting, accounting, and reporting functions.
Professor Hutton is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Virginia. His research focuses on internal controls, particularly their role in mitigating fraud in veteran-owned small businesses.
